A professional landscape designer creates paradise at her own home
Today ’s photos come from Deb Evans :
I live in the Sacramento foothill of Shingle Springs ( elevation 1600 ) . I am in Zone 8/9 with heavy Henry Clay soil , many native stones , and very big stones and boulders . When we moved here 5 -1/2 year ago , we were delighted to get a large 3/4 - Akko lot with great potential for the abode itself and , most important to me , the landscape .
I am a lifetime nurseryman and studied landscape design with Rob Littlepage . Debby Evans Garden Design was my business of 10 age , until I stepped away from design and installations to confabulate and to mentor bookman work with Rob .

When purchased , our lot had many scrub oak tree , pathological live oak , with only a handful of them healthy . We removed over 100 tree diagram , which break dance my eye . Many grew curve over our habitation and were at risk of damaging it . implosion therapy was a problem for us when heavy pelting carry runoff that came right away to our home . So I contrive ironical creek bed throughout , in specific emplacement to catch the overflow and direct it to a seasonal brook .
Improved drainage and capture of runoff water from rains as well as seclusion were my goals for this surface area along one side of our private road , adjacent to half an Akko we get out for succeeding renovation . A dry creek layer of native stone and a heavyset planting of ornamental shrub and trees attain those goals .
Using the “ bones ” of an superannuated composite deck , we install railings at the legal height and sum ignition that carries through the new steps .

Down the steps from the deck , the path conduct past a elevate layer faced with gamey rock down to a welcoming solar - heat up syndicate with aboriginal rocks .
Street view of crushed granite pathway , give visitors a wind access to front room access .
route along the pool .

A massive , moss - covered bowlder serves as a focal point in the garden .
This ironical creek layer is not just a ocular feature film ; it help manage runoff during heavy rains .
Plantings around the pool .
