Last year we grew three varieties of okra : Cowhorn , Clemson Spineless and Burgundy .
Of these , the Burgundy was the most impressive , bring forth continuously for months and pass an ultimate tiptop of around 8′ , as seen in this psychedelic freeze - frame fromone of my more arthouse telecasting :
The Burgundy also seemed to stay tender longer than the other types .

However , we saved seeds from all of last year ’s and I mixed them together in a jar .
We are also add together in some more type to set about our own local okra landrace .
I planted these selections in the gardens this morning :

More Cowhorn and Clemson , plus some Burgundy seedpod .
And Alabama Red .
And Orange Jing , which did nifty in my friend Elizabeth ’s garden .

It ’s also the most beautiful gumbo I have ever seen .
With it , we are tot up Louisiana 16 Inch Long Pod .
I also have a cross from Johnny ’s holler “ Jambalaya . ”

I do n’t make love where I got those weirdly fat - podded okras , but I broke one of them open to embed as well .
Apparently , okra seeds can be used as a chicken feed since they moderate about 20 % protein .
Perhaps I should also throw a bunch of my extra seeds over an area and till them in to grow as a grain ! There ’s an musical theme !

Last class we really enjoyed all the Abelmoschus esculentus we sustain and I bet forward to lend in basketful like this again :
Okra will self - pollinate and it will also foil - pollinate if bees are in the garden . I hope to add a beehive to the Grocery Row Gardens this spring which should REALLY blend these okras all up .
By the path , if you want to grow more than one type of okra in the garden WITHOUT the varieties crossing , just bag a prime right before it opens and lease it self - pollinate . After the seedpod form a couple of day later you may take the suitcase off and punctuate the pod as a “ pure ” eccentric and then economize seeds from it at adulthood .

I do n’t care about keeping unadulterated character , but some of you may have an heirloom you ’d like to keep while still growing unlike types . Each okra seedcase bear enough germ to plant a goodly few rows of okra , so it does n’t take many mature pod to give you right smart more ejaculate than you need .
This yr I look forward to pick up what happens and I hope to carry through lots and lots of seeds .
