We ’re getting some other loquat yield this year – and I ’m foreswear happy .

One of the main problem with growing loquat tree trees in my clime is the tree ’s wintertime blossom habit .

Frost ? Naw , do n’t conceive in it . It ’s bloom time !

This would n’t be a problem if it was n’t for our episodic freezes .

Loquat bloom ca n’t manage freezing temperature . The tree does fine down into the teens – but the blooms will freeze right off , and with them , your hopes for that class ’s loquat harvest .

There are solutions , however . One is to cautiously protect the tree with blankets ( or usemy softheaded trick to protect loquat yield from rime … it work on ! ) and another , lesser know trick is to grow varieties of loquat with somewhat unlike bloom of youth cycle .

Frost? Naw, don’t believe in it. It’s bloom time!

One of these varieties was given to me as scion wood by my Quaker Oliver Moore . He calls the cultivarShambala , though he thinks it may be a diverseness that exists under another name . Its parentage is unknown butShambala’speculiar flower substance abuse is a boon to nurseryman in marginal Japanese plum - growing climate .

Shambala , unlike other Eriobotrya japonica , will start blooming quite too soon and continue blossom right on through the wintertime and into the springiness . If flowers are lost , do n’t worry – more are likely on the way .

Here ’s theShambalagraft I   added to my big seedling loquat last   spring :

And here ’s what it ’s made right now :

That ’s an early fruit . We ’ve been frost - destitute on my homestead thus far this winter , allowingShambalato get a head - startle . The eternal sleep of the tree is in rosiness and has a few green fruit but they ’re not nearly as far along as thatShambalagraft .

Start Trees From Seed – See What Happens!

One of my seedling peaches also expose a long time of year of flower , unlike its commercial peach parentage . It ’s an excellent Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree for the backyard since it does n’t put all its eggs in one basketball hoop . I contrive on using it for transplant stock this year and sell the cultivar asDave ’s Long - blooming Peachbut selling the nursery and moving put a big fold in my plans .

When you start tree from seed you really do n’t know what you ’re give out to get . Really cool genetic combination can take place that you ’d never encounter if you just buy whatever the local greenhouse had for sales event . Shambalacame from a germ planted at some point and it ’s been blessing masses   with yield ever since , even when frosts take all the loquat   from neighboring trees .

As best as I can state , this Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree has the capability of blooming and setting fruit off and on from November through April . Impressive cycle .

If you get a quick winter , you ’ll have fruit in the middle . A freezing wintertime , you ’ll get yield in mid - outpouring . Either way , you ’ll usually get fruit .

I bid I could distinguish you all where to get one of your ownShambalatrees , but you ’ll have to hunt down Oliver for that . He has a nursery , off and on , but there ’s no website that I can find .

For now – learn togrow trees from semen .   Experiment ! You might get the nextShambala .

And think back , if you ’re in Florida … graft season start in just a calendar month . Get ready , andfollow my instructionsto get depart .
