The radishes at Heritage Farm are in full blossom ! Our anthesis beaut may no longer be eatable , but they are well on their direction to producing germ . as luck would have it , most radishes grow rapidly and will produce seed in one time of year .

Cool Radishes

Radishes are wondrously various with many different colors , shapes and size ! Spring and summer sort can be pink , red , white , gold , or purple . They can be shaped like medulla oblongata , be more elongated like fingers , or even point like carrot . wintertime varieties are much larger , often fateful , and need a longer get time of year to mature . Daikonradishes , an Oriental winter type , have foresighted clean roots prized for their crisp and tender flesh . This season , we maturate a very special Raphanus sativus longipinnatus in the Diversity Garden named‘Colony Summerrettig ’ . Charles Hoehnle of Homestead , Iowa donated the seed of this variety in 1995 . It originated from the Amana Colonies of fundamental Iowa , which were settle in 1856 by a mathematical group of German Pietists . These settlers lived a self - sufficient communal aliveness until the mid-1930s . This radish was grown in the dependency gardens , prized for its regal roots and power to reseed for a surrender craw . Our planting in the Diversity Garden grow to be quite big before flowering !

How to Grow Radishes
