Last week I posted a new video on how to plant yams :
This is my favorite natural selection food crop , as well as one of the most fun to originate . The hard part is getting the ground ready !
Yams are one of the best endurance crops in the world . There are multiple varieties , from the Lisbon yam plant to the yellow yam plant , the Irish potato yam to the purple yam plant . They are all in the Dioscorea category and are not to be confused with sweet white potato vine , which are not even slimly related .

Here ’s how to grow yams :
I use a broadfork to loose the soil . It ’s good to have aid with this part .
Loose stain is important for yam growth . It is also important to have fertile soil . Rotted fauna manure is a good alternative and is preferred to chemical fertilizers , unless youlive in a place where Dow Agrosciences is pitch their toxicant . In the typesetter’s case of my yam plant beds , I do not need to lend fertilizer or manure because the ground is new worked and is filled with N from the leguminous Tree we removed .

The “head” of a yam
Once I have loosen the ground deeply with myMeadow Creature , I shape the layer with my travail hoe .
I give the yam slew of space to grow . I also make good - sized hill because yams do not like blotto foundation .
Yams can be jump from pieces of the ascendant , from the “ head ” of the late class ’s growth , or from aerial bulbils on some species . Plant , but not too mystifying , get laid that the yam will develop down from where they are buried .

The “ brain ” of a yam
Here ’s the minisett method of yam plant multiplication :
Though you do n’t see this part in the telecasting , this is the next footstep you must take . yam like support so they can climb into the Lord’s Day and mature . If you do n’t jeopardize them , they wo n’t produce . In a future television I will manifest my staking method acting . A very vernacular one is just to lodge stick in the ground , like so :

The “head” of a yam
I now prefer to do this :
If you do n’t get pelting , be sure to water your freshly planted yam bottom . Yams are a tough crop but they do well with weewee . Also keep your yam beds weeded so they do n’t face solution competition during the maturate season . I weed between row with a hoe but near the yam plant flora I weed by hand so as not to damage the vine or base .
As you weed , be sure to direct wandering yam vines onto your trellis system so they do n’t cheat on off along the ground .

When the vines pass back in wintertime , it is time to poke your yam . Carefully dig around them so as not to cut into the base , then wash them gently . Here ’s how I savvy one up from my onetime Florida food for thought forest :
The heads can be remove before selling the tooth root , as you ’ll want them for next year ’s planting . If you are not planning on selling the yams , you could just leave the head on until you want to eat the yam yourself .
Speaking of that , Sue asked a good question onmy YouTube television about yam planting :

Yams sample starchy , like a whitened potato . Not unfermented , with the exception of the “ potato yam plant , ” which is slenderly sweet . Some potpourri can be a little bitter but I quash those .
Thanks for reading . Go plant some yam !
