Ruth shows you how to safely transplant young plants.
The past few calendar month have been so gray and smashed it ’s been hard to keep the liveliness up .
However , I got my ‘ happy fix ’ by seed lot of seeds and now several of them are ready to be pot on from their seed trays into modules or humble containers . I in the main use multipurpose compost for more robust seedlings and John Innes No 1 for smaller , more delicate varieties .
Seedlings are fantastically vulnerable so it is authoritative to give them the right caution .

They call for damp compost , but not too damp or they will rot , and good breathing otherwise they can fall foul of damp off , a fungous disease that can wipe out a whole mountain of young flora .
I grow mine on bright windowsills out of direct sunshine that can singe attender foliage , and I remove the tray hat as soon as I see signs of germination to assure expert flow of air around the seedlings . When they have develop their first couple of set of ‘ proper ’ leaves , as opposed to the little germination pamphlet , your seedlings are ready to pot on . I utilise an old teaspoonful or plant label to outflank them up , one at a time , from their tray , holding cautiously on to a folio as I do so .
Never touch the stem as you risk damage it and killing the plant . Pot them into their unexampled peck or module ( see below ) and do n’t worry if a proficient duration of stem is buried – it will merely encourage the seedling to make superfluous roots leading to more robust plants . Keep their compost moist and rise your Modern plant until outside temperatures are strong enough and they can be hardened off and plant out .

Get tender plants ready for life outside
1 . Fill modules or small pots with multipurpose compost and dib a deep hole in the centre of each .
2 . Using a spoonful or plant life label , cautiously lift out up a seedling rootball , contain the plantlet by a leaf .
3 . bug out the rootball into the dibbed maw , as deep as you could , and firm the compost around the plant .

4 . Water your seedling and place them somewhere light but out of direct sun . Keep the compost just damp , not sodden .
