So even though I ’m among the fortunate few who have a pile of space to grow fruit trees , I ’m still fascinated by espaliered trees , those topnotch - nerveless - appear , heavily prune jobbies that you see in cool place like France , Italy or that one nursery that no one can give . They ’re pruned to grow mat against a wall or fencing , saving garden spaceandlooking snazzy . A winnings - win !

At this point , I have two very untried trees that could be candidate for espalier : my cherished Cherokee sweetheart , turn from a seed , and a new babe bleak mission fig . After reading up on it a act , I make up one’s mind not to risk my small peach tree — it ’s irreplaceable , whereas the baby fig , not so much . But at this point , the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group is little more than a joint with a few buds , so I think I will be wait elsewhere for a victim … er … candidate .

Pruningfor espalier is tricky and mature for error , so I ’m planning a sojourn to the local affordable baby’s room to pick up a couple of likely campaigner . Malus pumila and pear tree are the easiest , but because I already have two apple trees and a hugely prolific pear tree diagram , I ask to incur something else . To the interwebs ! Yes , here we go : Other great works to espalier are those that vine . I ’m full up with blackberry , but I have only drive one grapevine , and it ’s busy attempt to eat my expectant dark-green fig tree .

I ’ve got a perfect spot against the back fence of the Fortress Garden . It ’s got all - daylight sunlight and southern exposure , and it wo n’t shade any of my other plants or garden beds . I can bosom the vine in between a couple of the artichoke box . I could even do two!Leonora / Enking

Espalier is very common invineyards . If you ’ve ever been in wine country , you ’ve likely seen those nifty rows of vine twisting along double or triple rows of cable television service , provide undefendable space between run-in to make picking and flora management light . What I like about this method acting is that it keeps the espaliered dupe … er , plant … small and low , which means no ravel or reaching . I based most of my garden pattern around me not cause to do anything much below or above the ten-strike zone ( knees to shoulders ) . Not that Ican’tbend and reach ( Namaste , yoga family … ) , but in my personal experience , too much of that form of activity just lead to catastrophe and meth packs .

There ’s a heap of information out there about how to make a trellis for your espalier victim ( let ’s just call it what it is , shall we ? ) , but because my garden fencing is wood position and deer wire , I can cut this step and bond my new vine directly to the fencing .
