Gardening under the North Carolina pines
My name is Lydia Grupinski , and I garden with my husband , Ray , on the shores of Lake Norman in Mooresville , North Carolina , just outside of Charlotte . Being located right on the weewee in a protect cove , we are in Zone 7b/8a . I am an avid gardener , plant gatherer , and former landscape designer . I bulge my Pura Vida Gardens in 2013 . Today I am put in photograph of mywoodland garden . In 2013 , all that existed was a point of view of fledged shortleaf pines(Pinusechinata , Zones 6–9 ) and one lone baby yucca . I envisioned this orbit as my future forest garden . I go by set up a functioning wry river bed to move rain from the front of the prop through the pine and away from the lawn . I installed two flat stone bridge over the teetotal river bed to permit access to various areas of the woodland garden . I then began to set up plants .
I now have a collection of approximately 26Japanese maplesthroughout the property as well as many strange and hard - to - find woody and herbaceous specimens . I use only organic fertilizer and do all the weeding by hand . I hire anIPMapproach , using synthetic pesticide and herbicides only as a last resort . If a plant life is too prone to diseases or pests , or if it struggles in our climate , I do n’t grow it . My cacoethes for plants and love of all my gardens run deep and has for sure been underscored during the preceding year of quarantine ! Ray and I feel very blessed having this attribute to take care of as well as being a beautiful , tranquil and dependable space to spend clock time out of doors . I am happy to partake a peek into one part of Pura Vida Gardens and hope you revel it as much as we do !
By the house , a southerly magnolia ( Magnolia grandiflora , Zones 6–10 ) render off its sheeny evergreen plant foliage and vast white , fragrant bloom .

The timberland garden ’s paved path guides visitors under the canopy of mature shortleaf pine tree .
The tall pines in the woodland garden put up smart shade that allows many plants to fly high .
Farfugiumjaponica(Zones 7–10 ) has sprays of icteric foliage over big , bold , shiny green leaves .

The trunks of the pine tree provide a beautiful vertical idiom throughout the garden .
Flower ear of apineapple lily(Eucomiscomosa , Zones 7–10 ) make an strange and long - go statement .
In other springiness , hellebores(Helleborushybrids , Zones 4–9 ) rosiness under the soft chicken , fragrant blossom of an edgworthia ( Edgeworthiachrysantha , Zones 7–9 ) .
