Windowsills keep flowers coming all winter
Today ’s exposure are from Nicki Snoblin in Lake Bluff , Illinois .
Since there ’s not much going on out of doors right now , I thought I ’d share some indoor photos .
To keep off the winter claptrap , I like to have as much people of color and potpourri as potential in myindoor plant . Cats are # 1 in our house ( after the humans ) , so I have to be measured about plant arrangement to keep both the plants and the cats good . I have pliant shelving units in front of the few cheery windows in my house ; they ’re not swish , but they do the job .

I usually haveAfrican violets(Streptocarpus ionanthus)blooming in winter , and the last two old age I ’ve been fortunate to haveorchidsbloom as well .
This yellow orchid is Blc . Hsinying Sunbeam ‘ # 15 ’ .
And here is a purplemoth orchid(Phalaenopsishybrid ) .

At Christmas this year I had a nice brightpoinsettia(Euphorbiapulcherrima)along with a few Christmas cactus(Schlumbergera × buckleyi)in bloom .

I grew some spider plants(Chlorophytum comosum‘Variegatum ’ , zone 8–11 ) in pots outside last summertime , and they were doing so well I could n’t have a bun in the oven to get free of them in surrender , so in they get along . I found other homes for a few of them , and the stay ones are on a in high spirits ledge . I put a mirror behind them in the hope that the reflected light would keep the backs from dying off . In fountain I ’ll plant the “ baby ” in myoutdoor flock .

In another windowpane I have a few plant life that came indoors for the winter .
One , an oxalis(Oxalistriangularis , Zones 7–11 ) , flourish during its summer outdoors , but now the farewell have become spot . Any idea what may be causing that ? Interesting fact : I have had this oxalis works for 50 years , ever since my college botany prof gave me a few corm . Since the plant life sporadically dies back and then regenerate itself , the original corms are probably long kick the bucket , but I still count it as the same industrial plant .
Finally , I winter several crinum lilies(Crinum asiaticum)and amaryllis(Hippeastrumhybrids ) each year . I usuallyforcethe amaryllis , but this year I decided to try keeping them at elbow room temperature all winter and will plant them outside in the springiness to see if they will flower . Wish me luck !
