Looking forward to some of the most beautiful flowers of the gardening year
Peonies are just popping out of the ground in my garden , showing their reddish new foliage , and it got me all excited about the show to come later in the season . peony are such a delightfully over - the - top sort of prime . They are absurdly immense , often fragrant , richly colored , and typically mob with hundred of petals . In the garden or in the vase , they make a statement like no other industrial plant . But unlike some other over - the - top beautiful efflorescence ( I do n’t want to name figure , but … rosebush ) , peonies are also delightfully tough , carefree , deer resistive and astonishingly long - endure . This is a plant you’re able to put in the priming coat now and have your large - grandchildren still be enjoying them long after you are break . All they really ask is that you back them so those huge flowers do n’t tumble in the mud . And did I mention they ’re beautiful ? To get you all as excited about this plant as I am , I dug up some images from one of the bang-up peony collections out there : the Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor , Mich. Founded in 1922 , this garden is a striking collection . It now sport over 500 variety , some of which are still thriving just where they were planted nigh 100 long time ago . Every twelvemonth in late May and other June , the garden is overflowing with color and fragrance .
‘ Silvia Saunders ’ may be my ducky of them all . This variety was engender by the influential peony breeder A.P. Saunders . And of the literally hundreds of varieties he bring forth , he select to name this special one after his girl . I hump the semi - treble form that bear witness beautiful yellow stamens inside the layers of pallid pink and white petal .
‘ Buckeye Belle . ’ Can anything tick that coloring ? While peonies sure as shooting be given to the pinks , this is the mystifying , richest red arrange off beautifully by the trice of jaundiced stamen peaking out .

‘ Do Tell ’ is what is holler an anemone or Japanese form peony — unspecific petal on the outside and a mass of small “ petaloids ” in the center .
I did n’t capture the name on this one , but what a peach ! It captures what paeony do best — huge , exuberant , full , over - the - top .
Another Nipponese bloom form , this one has pinkish petal beleaguer a lush center of almost ashen flower petal . This mixture appears similar to the popular cultivar ‘ Bowl of Beauty ’ but with a softer colouring .
