Propagation
Third fourth dimension lucky ? I ’m going to propagate this damned ceanothus if it kills me . It is tight becoming my propagation scourge . The Joker to my Batman . The Khan to my Kirk . The Kryptonite to my Superman . You get the idea . I have adjudicate hardwoodcuttings , and softwoodcuttings , both of which failed miserably . It is now a good time of yr to try semi - ripe hound cuttings so here goes .
First I clean up my workspace , in fussy the cut surface , scissors , blade and dibber , and washed the sens out .

I then tailor the sprig from the shrub . There ’s plenty of fabric in these few stems .
Semi - good is when the ending of the stem is still soft but the base is firming up . Heel cuttings work well . To get a heel press cutting , hold the side shoot near the bag and softly pull it down and away from the chief stem .
It should take a sliver of the main stem with it , the dog .

hound cuttings are adept because the area where the side shoot joins the main stem has a prevalence of cells that can morph into root cellular telephone . take a bounder like this ensures that a crew of these cell are taken with the cutting off – more than would be fill if just snipping it off . In fact the heel itself is surplus , it need to be removed as it will rot off and jeopardize the cutting . I pare the heel confining to the infrastructure of the side shoot using a sharp leaf blade .
Next the absolute majority of the theme needs to be strip of leafage . If these are inter they will decompose and probably kill off the cut . The stem is fragile , I ’ve read that it ’s best to dress using a blade from base to bakshish rather than the other way around . This minimises the chances of stripping the stem . I was painfully tempt to just buck off the leaves with my hand but I resisted .
A nice blank radical is what I was after with a few leaves leave at the top .

I repeated this process for each side shoot , popping the prepared stem into a dampish Ziploc bag to keep them perky , as this take a while .
I take burden because I wanted to try a duet of compost mixes and a dyad of surroundings . I meet two 7 atomic number 96 can with my common mix of two parts grit to one part vermiculite , and another two with two voice multipurpose compost to one part grit . I set up the cutting around the edge of each pot , dipping each in water and then rooting endocrine powder , just the crown . I used the dibber to poke a honest hole in dampish compost then popped in the theme and gently tauten in . There were eight stems per pot with two spare , so two mess had nine in .
I put each potentiometer into its own Ziploc base , added a little water , then hive up in the nursery . Two pots move in the heated bench , one of each compost mix , the other two break down on unwarmed staging .

Now , only time will secern …
I ’ll be back with an update in a few weeks , hopefully root - related !
