Scent in the Garden. August.
It is odd that with so much color in the garden and the pollinators bring extra time , there is not a great hatful of fragrance . Winter and spring blossom seem to rely on bouquet to attract any bee in the vicinity , but now vivid colouring material does the antic .
In a sunny stance against a wall , the Jersey Lily , Amaryllis belladonnaproduces its fragrant , trumpet- shaped flowers on long naked stems , earning it the common name of defenseless lady . It does call for a sunny summer like the one we have enjoyed this year to produce its blooms .

Amaryllis belladonna
Now , once and for all , let ’s be clear that the brilliant coloured flowers we enjoy in potbelly in winter areHippeastrumnotAmaryllis .
Hippeastrum puniceum , notAmaryllis
Hippeastrum puniceum come from South America andAmarylliscomes from South Africa where it grows in stony ground . The flowers have a toothsome scent rather reminiscent of house of cards gumwood , but much nice .

Amaryllis belladonna
The other mutual name for it is Jersey lily , although it is not a lily at all . The great Pre - raphaelite artist , John Everett Millais paint the portraiture of Lily Langtree who was a keep beauty and actress . As she came from Jersey he need to portray her as a Jersey Lily . Unfortunately , Amaryllis belladonnawas not available in the bloom marketplace whilst he was painting so he gave her aNerineto grip alternatively .
Amaryllisare quite light and have been interbreed with other genera to produce some lovely plant . For instance , Crinum mooreihas similar blooms and it has been crossed withAmaryllisto produceAmarcrinum . This move me to go out and sniff my Crinums and indeed they are fragrant too . I had never noticed before .

I think I might try a little hired man pollenation to see what I can get . Amaryllishas also been queer with Nerine sarniensisto createAmarine , but my Nerines are not in bloom yet so I ca n’t try that one .
Many people take away theirHostaflowers because they finger the gawky appearance spoils the look of the plant . There is oneHostathough which I grow just for its lovely scented blooms although it has beautiful foliation too .
Hosta‘Guacamole ’

If you like the mind of scentedHostaflowers there are over 58 useable now ; they are all descended fromHosta plantagineawhich was formerly the only scentedHostaavailable . My lovely ‘ Guacamole ’ was a sport of”Fragrant Bouquet ’ . There is now a mutation of ‘ Guacomole ’ usable called ‘ Ambrosia ’ , I have my eye on that one too . You do n’t have to sacrifice beautiful leaves to love these odoriferous prime .
Many rose are flowering again and I specially relish the Darling River bud and peak ofRosa‘Perle d’Or . It produces so many sweet sweet-smelling flowers . I would love to wear this as a button hole so I could whiff it all day .

In fact in fourth dimension it grows into a tree diagram . It is the most fragrant flora in the garden at the moment .

In winter and spring we all relish the wonderful lily - of - the -valley scent of our Mahonia . I have a endearing summertime bloom one . It does not have the powerful bouquet that we await from aMahoniabut I call up it is very pretty with its Orange River buds .

That Clerodendron ( sp ? ) sure is spectacular . And the orange bud of your Mahonia are attractive , too . Amaryllis Atropa belladonna is so alike to Lycoris squamigera and both are scream “ Naked Ladies ” and “ Surprise Lilies . ” I have several patch of Lycoris , which is wreathe down with its blooms now . That ’s when we recognise the summer is wind down . 😦
I ’m in love with that Mahonia , which I ’ve never seen here . I envy you the Hosta too , which are impossible to grow here , although they ’re on occasion happen in local garden centers . I did n’t realize that Amaryllis belladonna plant was scent . I hope the bulbs I received from another blogger to begin with this yr will make an appearance next year – they remain in concealment this year . Like Hippeastrum , they ’re comparatively drought tolerant and will naturalize here ( assuming that we get at least some wintertime rainwater ) .
So many sweet-smelling blooms here . Since we only have blooms for three time of year , I attempt to plant those with scent through the seasonsalthough until I cut some I ca n’t reek their redolence .
