Everyone ’s favourite hairdresser just wants everyone to be present — and to bar sleeping on wallpaper . Here , France gives an inner facial expression at work up his pipe dream home plate , being a dad of two , and hosting during the vacation .

This is n’t much of a secret , but Tan France ’s generosity knows no limits . He ’s provided several lifespan ’ Charles Frederick Worth of style and animation advice through his work on eight season ofQueer Eye(with the new place to premiere in January ) andNext in Fashion , the challenger show he hosts with Gigi Hadid . But his taste extends beyond closet — and it shows in every corner of his menage .

Fresh off a move into his dream menage , which he made with his husband and two yearling - aged children , France has a decor style as refined and personal as his wardrobe .

And while he ’s every bit as posh as he come across on TV ( in the good fashion ) , his House Rules could n’t be more relatable . France loves arelaxed get together — when you come over , everything is provided for you ; he ’s doing the cooking ( and bake ) . The only things he asks of you : Take off your shoe , keep food out of the living elbow room , and do n’t attend in his loo .

Tan France’s House Rules—and Making Your Space Your Own

If you had to hang a list of rules in your home, what would they be?

Tan France

I ’m like , ‘ If you want to come to my sign of the zodiac , enjoy what we ’re all doing . Do n’t get your own devices so you could just act Call of Duty with people . ’

You recently moved into your dream home—how did you know it was the one, and what are some of your favorite elements?

We formally moved three twenty-four hours ago , but we are presently moving out of this home which is the home plate that we ’ve lived in the last six years . The new home — we had it build ; my husband and I designed the house over the last two and a one-half years . I do n’t have a favourite section quite honestly because I ’m obsessed with everything . The star sign is so gorgeous , and I ca n’t wait for the universe to see it . I intend it is magical , and what makes it my dream home is that it ’s a Tudor home . It ’s the kind of home I ’ve always desire to inhabit in , and it ’s the variety of home that I just know I will never want to sell ; I ’ll never desire to move from — it ’s myforever base . It ’s in the locating I ’ve always been obsessed with , and I ca n’t wait for my kidskin to be raised there .

When you’re decorating a space, what’s your process like once you have your vision, and how do you execute it? Is it similar to the way you might put together an outfit?

So the first thing we talked about when we were doing the house and designing every blank … we were so particular about every goddamn space , like down to the computer hardware — we got custom designed computer hardware , custom plan the piece of furniture , the wallpaper , so that finger just so unambiguously us .

So the first enquiry is , ‘ What do we want to palpate in this space ? [ We do n’t ] just want it to be pretty , want it to be courteous , what do we really want to experience ? ’ I want to feel calm ; I want to palpate peace ; I desire to sense delight ; I want to find excitement . I desire this room to give me energy . And so that ’s how we depart . And then , ‘ What are the colors that make us sense that direction ? ’

Then we typically start with — thewhole business firm is wallpaper . What kind of wallpaper do we appear at in this infinite that ’s operate to make us experience that thing that we want to feel ? And once we ’ve got the wallpaper , we then begin to lick on everything else that die in it because of the normal that ’s on the composition , the color that ’s on the newspaper .

Basically , I see it as an extension of what I do with clothes in fashion , which is when I ’m designing a collection , I will usually start out with a print that I love . And it ’s typically a print that I ’ve seen on an actress in the ’ XXX , ’ 40s , ’ 50s . I love vintage , so I ’ll observe erstwhile Hollywood and Bollywood movies and see colour I make out together , then try and create a mark around those .

Then I ’ll take that , put it onto composition , and then extract colors from that to ramp up out the rest of the way . For example , our dining elbow room right now : That gorgeous wallpaper [ has ] elements of pink and burgundy , and so for the fireplace brick we chose was terracotta , but it ’s got a hint of pinko to it . And it has this tiny number of blue throughout the paper , so the dining chairs are blue . It has a tiny bit of Burgundy wine , so the rug that we use is burgundy . So at every turn , we ’re look at the paper to see what we can take from it that will pull the room together .

Basically , I see it as an extension of what I do with clothes in fashion , which is when I ’m designing a collection , I will usually start with a photographic print that I love .

Wallpaper has been huge recently.

Well , here ’s the affair : The Americans were sleep on wallpaper . The Brits have been using wallpaper . We do n’t typically utilise key in our space other than the trims because it ’s cold , and wallpaper adds so much fondness and reduces the echo . I do n’t understand why it ’s taken so long for the Americans to catch up .

Are there any other ways that you add personal touches to make your house into a home?

Yeah , when it comes to the delicate furnishings that we use — this is an obvious thing , but for anyone who ’s not excited or does n’t really understand interior purpose or design — thoselayers of textureare really significant to me , just as important in way when I ’m throw on an getup , I ’m not wear out the same fabric in every piece I ’m wearing . So I ’ll outwear denim , then I ’ll add leather — I want those layers of textile to really complement each other but also highlight the difference of opinion between the things that I wanted to highlight .

And so that ’s the case with the menage . So the fabric for the rug is very different from the fabric on the sofa , which is very unlike from the fabric of the ottoman , which is very different from the cloth of the pillows that we ’re using . And so all those things aid it finger a fate more like a home . It ’s not just a studio apartment ; it ’s not just a showroom . I curated every one of these fabrics to make it experience like a house because of my folk .

And speaking of families—I’m sure there are many, but how have some of the ways you decorate changed since becoming a father?

Because we have two children — we have a two - year - older and a five - year - honest-to-goodness who is getting into literally everything . We know that he ’s give out to put down this young house . However , we did n’t require to compromise the wall . Having nestling really go through the kind of furniture we have in the house — where we set hardware , what variety of fine art we can have — so we ’ve tried to do thing that do n’t have sharp corners . Everything has a rounded corner so that if one of them bumps their foreland , it ’s not going to slew them . We put ironware on the fridge and freezer that ’s a lot higher than we typically would have so they ca n’t open that easily . The spacing of our banisters is a lot tighter than it ever would have been if we did n’t have kids .

But when it make out to things like the wallpaper , I still want those gorgeous custom mural . And I just be intimate they ’re gon na deflower it , and I ’ll just say , ‘ Okay . I had it for a few month . I had the home of my aspiration , and you ruined it . ’ And then afterwards we ’ll change it out for a few months then later we ’ll vary it out to something that you wo n’t deflower .

Holidays at the Frances’

Two reasonableness I keep [ my tree diagram ] up late : I ’m lazy . It takes ages to take it down . Putting up is really leisurely , taking it down is a incubus . But also , why would n’t you want that joy ?

When do you start decorating for the holidays?

Halloween . For the last 12 eld , we have put up our tree on Halloween , and it comes down on Valentine ’s Day . And I know everyone thinks I ’m demented . It fetch me so much joyfulness . And I say , ‘ Why would you confine joy to three or four weeks ? ’ That is bonkers to me . And so if you ’re in your home , and everyone else appreciates it , who wish if the cosmopolitan public thinks you ’re nuts ? As long as it makes you happy and you ’re not doing any harm to anyone else , do it .

Do you have any favorite holiday traditions to celebrate? Are there any that you’ve brought over from the UK that you’d like to share with people?

So I be intimate that that ’s a very , very American style of doing aChristmas dinneror a Thanksgiving fiesta . Whenever we do Thanksgiving or Christmas , we do a more British version of it , which is a little more uncomplicated and a lot less fresh .

So it ’s typically always the same — it ’s a knock of some sort , whether it be — well , it ’s usually chicken in our sign or turkey . We do n’t really get it on the single-foot of lamb or anything like that . And then we do make fun vegetable and Yorkshire puddings which are not at all part of American standard . We wish German flannel cake . We always have English boom . We get it from Amazon , and that ’s the bonanza we use . We utilize parsnip a lot as opposed to other American vegetables . We do n’t have sweet white potato casserole with marshmallows ; we find amalgamate dessert and savoury very odd . We do n’t have cranberry juice , that ’s also a angelical affair — we do n’t mix in zesty and sweet , so our holiday food is very much English .

Speaking of UK traditions, are there any in general you’re passionate about introducing here?

Almost every land has a version of this , they just maybe do n’t have a name for it — but also many places have a name for it . Australia does , New Zealand does , Canada does , and England really does : We call it Elevenses .

Elevenses is the time of day around about 10:30 or 11 o’clock when you ’re typically at workplace , and you start to get peckish . That ’s a very English term — hungry , snackish . And so typically in England , you ’re blend in for a breakfast bar or a yoghurt , but very typically yogurt . And soNoosaasked me if I would serve them name this time in America because obviously they are a yogurt , and they ’ve heard me say many time over the last few age , they ’re my preferred yogurt . Even though I was not endorsed by them in any way back in the mean solar day , I would say there ’s only dear yogurt in America , and that ’s Noosa . And so they ask if I would get together their campaign to merely encourage Americans to bond the British name to it , which is Elevenses . Because of all the names across the world for this big daybreak snack , it ’s the one that is the most obvious that makes it very clear what it is . So get your yogurt .

How do you like to set the mood for a holiday get together?

A standard candle for sure , usually something piney . I do love Christmas music . And I blind the lights . And always getsome kind of stewgoing .

Do you prefer a casual or formal feel when it comes to hosting?

Always casual . Whenever somebody come over to our house , I always say please outwear fret or pyjama . I ’m not dressing up ; do n’t you feel pressured to garnish up .

I know you’re a big baker; what’s your favorite thing to bake for the holidays?

Do you know what — my favorite bake all year isIna Garten ’s burnt umber cakewith chocolate buttercream frost . But then I do my version of it , which is I tally so much peppiness in many form . Crystallized ginger , stem gingerroot , ginger powder — and so with every layer you ’ve got a dissimilar kind of ginger . It ’s wizard . I have a go at it ginger and chocolate together .
