Telling time and taming wild creature takes on a whole raw meaning in the capricious Topiary Garden at Lotusland , located on a large acres in Santa Barbara , Calif.

The topiary fantasyland dates back to 1955 , when Madame Ganna Walska , the owner of the estate at the sentence , hired landscape painting architect Ralph Stevens to create the 25 - foot - diam flowered clock that serves as the centerpiece of the garden .

Up until the last few year of her life , Madame Ganna Walska was the “ nous gardener ” of Lotusland . She died in 1984 , leaving her garden and her entire estate to the Ganna Walska Lotusland Foundation , to ensure that her legacy would remain in her garden .

Madame Walska then began populate her garden with a zoo of topiary fauna , birds and reptiles she acquired from the Osaki Plant Zoo in Los Angeles . To mingle among them , she tot up giant topiary cheat pieces and other geometrical anatomy . Her quirky topiary “ zoological garden ” vividly expressed her fascination with the complicated relationship between humanity , plant and animals .
